ALAIA Surf Lodge
Blame the view. ALAIA looks straight down at La Fortuna. From November to early April the humpbacks come through, and you’ll see so many you stop counting. There’s a villa, two trailers, three campsites and a salt water pool. That’s about it.
One bedroom and an 80 m² covered terrace. You can see the ocean without lifting your head off the pillow, and it stays cool on the hottest days.

Just below The Lookout. A queen bed, bunks for the kids and a big patio you’ll end up living on.

Three sites for tents, vans and RVs up to 30 ft. You get the pool, a hot outdoor shower and Wi-Fi fast enough to work from. The gate closes at night, so your gear stays put.

Nine Palms, a few minutes’ driveThe surf
La Fortuna is a reef break with a long right and, some days, a decent left. It’s a short walk down the hill.
We’re in the middle of a 20 km stretch with about 30 waves on it. All reefs and points, no beach breaks. Some are fast and hollow, some are soft enough to learn on. Nine Palms and Shipwrecks are a few minutes’ drive.
We do surf lessons, guiding and board rental, and we’ll point you to whichever spot is working that day.
Don’t surf? The same reefs are good for snorkeling, and the hammocks are good for watching everyone else surf.
A good day
Coffee, and a look at the waves. Walk down and paddle out. Back up for a swim in the pool, where you can keep an eye on the sets.
Breakfast, then a nap. Lunch, another swim, the afternoon surf.
Then the fire, a cold beer and maybe some steaks on the grill while the sun goes down. Bed by eight. Baja midnight.

After dark
It’s as quiet as it gets out here. In swell season you fall asleep to the waves. In winter, when it’s flat, you hear humpbacks slapping their fins on the water.
Most nights are cloudless, so the Milky Way is out as soon as it’s dark. At 1 am it’s something else. Go outside and look up.

About us
We live here all year with our daughter, three dogs, a cat and a few chickens. The dogs will play fetch until your arm gives out. The chickens take your table scraps, and the garden grows the herbs and tomatoes. Stay long enough and Jaime might make you paella.
