Alaia was inspired by a deep love for the ocean and a dream of creating a space where surf culture, simplicity, and soul could meet. What started as a few tents on the sand has grown into a unique surf lodge experience—personal, peaceful, and full of salty freedom.
We’re Jaime and Mel
We’re Jaime and Mel — a small family living our dream on one of the most stunning pieces of land in all of La Fortuna. Alongside our daughter, four playful dogs, a cat who thinks he’s one of them, and a flock of chickens, we call Alaia Surf Lodge home.
Alaia has been over 15 years in the making. Jaime, a lifelong surfer and professional Yacht Captain, spent years traveling the world in search of the perfect location — a place with waves right out front, open space, and the peace to live close to nature. Mel, a political science grad and full-time mom, shared that vision for a slower, intentional life grounded in family and freedom.
What began as a dream slowly took shape. Every detail of Alaia — from the layout of the land to the guest experience — reflects our hands-on approach and background in hospitality. This is a place that feels both elevated and real.
The view alone is worth the journey: an unobstructed panorama of the Sea of Cortez, golden sunsets, and front-row seats to one of Baja’s most consistent surf breaks. It’s no exaggeration — we truly lucked into the best location in the area.
Our values are rooted in family, freedom, surf culture, and self-sufficiency. We believe in living simply, growing what we can in our seasonal garden, and minimizing waste. Our water is recycled, our waste is composted, and every corner of Alaia reflects our commitment to sustainability and care for the land.
But what truly sets Alaia apart is how personally we take your experience. We live here, and we treat every guest like family. Whether it’s helping you find the best surf break, sharing a sunset with a cold beer, or cooking a meal together — we go the extra mile not because it’s policy, but because it’s who we are.
Our vision is to grow slowly and intentionally — adding a few more thoughtfully designed units, a pool, a sauna, and a café — all without ever losing the soul of what makes Alaia special. We’ll always be here, welcoming guests as friends, and sharing this piece of paradise with those who appreciate it as much as we do.
