East Cape surf guide

La Fortuna, Nine Palms and the reefs in between

The coast

About 30 waves in 20 km.

ALAIA sits in the middle of a 20 km stretch of the East Cape with about 30 waves on it. All of them are reefs and points, no beach breaks. Some are fast and hollow, some are soft enough to learn on.

La Fortuna

The wave out front.

La Fortuna is a reef break with a long right and, some days, a decent left. It’s a short walk down the hill from ALAIA.

A busy day is about ten people out. You can check it from the pool, or from bed.

Nine Palms, a few minutes from ALAIA on the East Cape

Nine Palms and Shipwrecks

A few minutes’ drive.

Nine Palms and Shipwrecks are both a few minutes’ drive from ALAIA. Look at the forecast before you go, and ask Jaime which spot is working that day.

When to come

Late March to early November.

April, May and June are excellent. August, September and October bring some of the best swell of the year, but it’s hurricane season and some days are for experienced surfers only.

In the winter off season there’s still a small wave almost every day, hip to shoulder high, so you can longboard or learn most days.

Water

In winter a neoprene top is all you need, and plenty of people surf in trunks all winter. Summer water is very warm, so trunks and a tee shirt. Bring sunscreen all year.

Lessons and boards

Board rental, surf lessons, guiding, 4×4 surf trips and surf photography. Message Jaime on WhatsApp to set it up.

Not surfing?

The same reefs are good for snorkeling. From November to early April you can watch humpback whales from the property.
